Badugi Strategy

When you play Badugi poker at a site like pokerstar, you need to be able to employ the proper strategies if you want to have any chance of winning because most players are very good. The competition is generally pretty strong on the Badugi tables because the game still hasn’t reached its full potential and most of the players who are playing the game now are those who have been playing the game for years.

The most important badugi poker strategy you need to learn is what starting hands you should play and what starting hands you shouldn’t play. Since you’re looking to have a hand with four different suits you’re going to obviously play every hand where you receive four different suits, but you also want to play others as well. When you have any low cards within the range of Ace-6 in different suits then I would recommend playing the hand to the first discard to see if you can’t pick up a premium Badugi hand.

You’re going to find that you end up folding a lot more hands then you actually play in Badugi so if you love action then you might want to play another game. You need to keep a strong starting hand selection when you play Badugi and you can’t stray very far away from the premium hands or else you could get caught. It only takes one mistake to lose a lot of money in Badugi and it could took awhile to make the money back depending on the skill level of the players on your table.

Since Full Tilt Poker players need to draw cards while playing Badugi you can learn a lot about what your opponent might potentially have by watching how many cards they draw. When your opponent isn’t taking any cards on the discard then you will be able to know that they have a Badugi hand and you will need to have at least a Badugi hand to have a chance. If you didn’t notice this and you played your hand because you have three low valued cards of different suits then you would lose some money, but with some observations you can save yourself money by watching how many cards your opponent takes.

You can also use bluffing a little bit in Badugi, but it doesn’t work as well as some poker games because you can’t play no limit in this game. Often in limit games players are a lot less scared to call down to the river so you will find that bluffing doesn’t work quite as well. If you want to make a bluff at the pot then I would recommend not taking any cards on the discard so it looks like you already have a four card hand with four different suits. If your opponent’s are watching and they believe you then you’re going to end up winning the pot, but since you can only bet whatever the table allows, it can be hard to scare out someone with a three or four card hand.
